How do you find and read your current Mahadasha and Antardasha?
Short answer: Generate a kundli with your exact date, time and place of birth, then find the Vimshottari dasha table and look up today's date. The planet running now is your Mahadasha; the sub-period inside it is your Antardasha.
How long is each Mahadasha?
- Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. Total: 120 years.
How do you read it?
- The Mahadasha sets the long theme; the Antardasha sets the current chapter.
- Look at where that planet sits in your chart and which houses it rules.
- Only then add transits such as Saturn or Rahu.
Why does exact birth time matter?
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so a few hours of error can shift dasha dates.
An illustration
Picture someone who asks AstroPal why their time feels bad and they feel anxious. Their chart shows Rahu Mahadasha with Ketu Antardasha: a restless, searching stretch inside a long Rahu period, not a verdict. Knowing when the sub-period ends gives them a calm timeline.

FAQ
Is dasha a prediction? It is a traditional timing framework for reflection, not a guarantee.
Not sure which chapter you are in right now? Check your running dasha on AstroPal and see how long it lasts.
Readings are for reflection, not prediction. Transit effects depend on your full chart and running dasha. Dates use sidereal (Lahiri) ephemerides; check exact times for your city on a Panchang.
