Why AstroPal is building a different business model for astrology

By the AstroPal team

Open most astrology apps and the first thing you meet is a meter. A countdown, a per-minute rate, a chat that starts free and ends at a paywall. We think the business model of astrology is a big part of why people have stopped trusting it. So before we talk about charts, let us talk about money.

How do the big names make money?

The two dominant models in Indian astrology apps, taken from their public pages:

  • The marketplace model (AstroTalk, AstroYogi). A big roster of astrologers on one platform, consulted one-to-one over chat or call. AstroTalk advertises 50,000+ verified astrologers on its homepage, with per-minute rates next to each profile. AstroYogi runs a similar astrologer marketplace, with the first chat free. The platform earns more the longer the conversation runs.
  • The report and listings model (AstroSage and other big astrology apps). Some sell generated horoscope reports, from transit forecasts to full life readings. AstroSage built its name on free tools, and also lists astrologers at per-minute rates, from about Rs 22 a minute on its homepage.

None of these companies is doing anything hidden. The model is on the homepage. But a model shapes behaviour: when revenue grows with minutes and add-ons, worry is good for business.

What is wrong with the meter?

A per-minute meter rewards length, not clarity. A frightened user who stays on the call is worth more than a calm user who logs off. Add remedy upsells on top - a gemstone here, a puja there - and the reading starts to work for the seller instead of the person asking.

What does AstroPal do instead?

  • Free tools that are actually free: a Kundli chart with PDF export, Gun Milan matching, love match, baby names, and Academy courses with the first chapters open to everyone.
  • 3 free questions when you sign up, plus 1 free question every day. No card needed to start.
  • A flat Pro price (Rs 599 a month) instead of a per-minute meter. Reports at flat, visible prices.

We earn when people find AstroPal useful enough to stay, not when they stay anxious. That is the whole point of the model.

Can we claim our model is more honest?

We can claim it is different, and you can check every part of it on astropal.app before spending a rupee. Whether it serves you better is yours to judge, with your own chart.

This article is from the AstroPal team, the makers of one of the products discussed. Competitor details are from their public pages in October 2026 and may change.
