What is Gun Milan, and what does a score out of 36 really tell you?

By Raaha Biswas

What is Gun Milan, and what does a score of 18 or 28 out of 36 really tell you?

Short answer: Gun Milan, also called Ashtakoota matching, is a traditional way to compare two birth charts. It looks at the Moon in each chart and gives eight areas (kootas) a share of 36 points. It is a conversation starter about temperament and compatibility, not a verdict on a relationship.

The eight kootas and their points

  • Varna: 1 point
  • Vashya: 2 points
  • Tara: 3 points
  • Yoni: 4 points
  • Graha Maitri: 5 points
  • Gana: 6 points
  • Bhakoot: 7 points
  • Nadi: 8 points

They add up to 36. Each koota reads a different theme, such as mental wavelength, temperament, emotional bond and family harmony. The match is worked out from each person's Moon sign and birth nakshatra, so an accurate birth time and place matter.

An illustration: a score that felt like a door closing

Imagine someone in Lucknow who was told their match scored 17 out of 36. They were also running Rahu Mahadasha with Ketu Antardasha, a phase traditional astrology links with restlessness and doubt. Every night they replayed the number and wondered if the relationship was doomed. Then they asked a better question: which kootas lost points, and what do those themes mean for how we talk, decide and spend time together? The number stayed the same. The fear got smaller, because the score became a list of things to talk about instead of a sentence passed on them.

How to use a Gun Milan score sensibly

  • Look at which kootas scored low, not only the total.
  • Treat Nadi and Bhakoot as prompts for honest conversations, not as final answers.
  • Remember that Gun Milan uses the Moon only. A full reading also looks at the whole chart and the dasha running for each person.
  • Different software and traditions can give slightly different results, so compare before you worry.
  • No score can promise how a relationship will turn out.

If you want to see the Moon placement behind a score, you can create a chart with the free Kundli tool on AstroPal. If you would rather understand the basics first, the AstroPal Academy has beginner courses, and the first two chapters are free.

Readers in India, Canada, the UK and Australia

Families in Delhi, Mumbai and Lucknow often bring up Gun Milan early in a match, and readers in Canada, the UK and Australia ask about it just as often. Many are looking for the best astrology app that explains the result in plain language rather than only printing a number. AstroPal aims to be that kind of app: Gun Milan is free, and you can ask follow-up questions about what each koota means.

FAQ

Is 18 out of 36 enough? Traditionally 18 is mentioned as a minimum, but many astrologers look beyond the total to the kootas and the full charts.

Does a low score mean we should not marry? No. It points to areas that may need attention. It is not a prediction.

Why do two apps give different scores? Calculation settings and the way each tool handles the Moon's nakshatra can differ.
